Field Day 07
Did we have fun, or what?!
In an effort to raise awareness and add more public exposure, the club held Field Day in the Books-A-Million parking lot in Monroe. Looks like the idea proved to be correct, as we had over a dozen folks stop by Friday during set-up, and even more once operations started Saturday.
The club rented a tent, to give us some shade from the Louisiana Summer sun, and to shield us from the Louisiana Liquid sunshine (yes, it rained). This year, we had the ARES van AND portable tower, along with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Dept. generator. We began setting up at 1 PM on Friday, after the tent, porta-potty and generator were delivered. After initial placement and layout, including standing the tower vertically and mounting the tri-bander, we decided to meet back at the site Saturday morning to hang the wire antenna and do final checkout. We actually hit the air at 1PM Saturday, and ran for 24 hours.
As sometimes happens, plans change and this included supper. Thanks BT (KE5HLT) for handling the grill. Thanks also to all those who sent sweets, snacks and other good stuff (including Joe, KB5VJY, with a coffee pot) to help keep the operators on the air. Additionally, an impromptu W5YI test session was put together during the event. Congratulations to Thomas, KD5OQC, for passing his General!
We pretty much kept Murphy at bay this year. We had a couple of slight interference problems and a few minor computer glitches, but these were worked out pretty quickly. We did manage to pull one coax connector completely off a feed line on the tribander (naturally after dark). Since it took them off the air, a highly motivated Paul and BT were able to climb to about 30 feet on the tower with extension cord and soldering iron and get it repaired (with plenty of harassment from the ground)!
Scores have been totaled and submitted. A report will be given at the club's August meeting. We made over 100 CW contacts, over 1000 SSB contacts, activated a GOTA station, qualified for a number of bonus points and gave a bunch of folks some air time. Thanks to those who set-up and tore down the event, those who operated, and those who came out to support and encourage, or just to visit.
A special thanks to the Field Day chairman, Paul, W5PEM, who put in more hours on this than most will know. Without his effort, this year's event would not have been nearly as successful.
Marengo Swamp Ride 2007
The 2007 Marengo Swamp ride is now history. We had just enough volunteers to pull the event off, with several having to do double duty. It is still a lot of fun, but when you have to do over 12 hours in the heat, it is tiring. Next year we hope to have more volunteers to help spread the load. Once again, we headed down Friday to get things set up. Once all was in place, the pit was set up and the now annual Friday afternoon cookout was held. Thanks to all who pitched in and a big thanks to Larry for handling the grilling duties.
We would like to recognize the following for their participation: N5ASA, KE5HLT, N5MEL, W5PEM, KA5JNL, KE5ESU, W5HUD, W5KGT, W5DSG, and K5ER.
We will have even more photos, with David, Mel, Larry and Kevin contributing for the 2007 running. Alan now has the page set up and ready. To view photos of the 2007 event, please visit the link 2007 Marengo Photos.

February 12 was the date of the LAQP this year. The Thibodaux Amateur Radio Club, W5YL , sponsored the event. Several club members participated in the event from their home stations, including N5ASA, K5MC, KE5AJC and N5HMH. Two club members operated Rover, activating multiple parishes for multipliers for those outside LA. For info on the rover operation, including route map and photos, visit http://www.qsl.net/w5wz/laqp05.htm
Field Day - 2004
We all know where we were and how much fun we had. Now the official results are available. Straight from the ARRL web site, here is our information:
| # | Call | Score | Category | QSOs | Power Mult | GOTA Call | Section | Participants | Club |
| 10 | W5EA | 8,018 | 3A | 2,313 | 2 | LA | 30 | Twin City Ham Club |
We scored tenth place in the 3A category, an all time best for the club. We were the top scoring club in the state and won the Section Managers plaque for this year. Out of the entire pool of entries, totaling over 2249, we placed at number 83. This puts us in the top 4 percent of all entries.
Photos from the event are available at the following link (thanks Alan):
